It really is the thought that counts, parents of new babies will enjoy any gift because it shows that you are sharing in their special time. However, sometimes a little advice can help you feel more confident about the baby gift you choose. After all, there are so many choices just a click away.
1. Offer Help Two (or more) babies are a lot of work. Some of your time is actually the best gift the new parents can really use. Cook a meal, offer to do the shopping or a load of laundry. Maybe mow the lawn or anything that you think might make things a little easier. Offer to watch the babies while Mom takes a nap. Even if they say they don't need any help, there is probably something you can do that they would appreciate more then even they know.
2. Gift Registry/Gift Card Most expectant parents have registered somewhere. Find out where they have registered and either select something that hasn't been purchased, or pick up a gift card from that store. This will allow the parents to get what they really need.
3. Diapers When speaking about what new born twins really need, diapers has to top the list. It's amazing how quickly a couple of newborns being changed 10 times a day (each!) can go through a case of diapers. This is one gift you know they'll use. And think of it this way, you're also saving a tired parent from making one extra trip to the store. Throw in a case of wipes to complete the package. **Tip: Even if the babies are premature, don't get preemie diapers. You'd be surprised how quickly they grow out of them. Newborn or even size one are a much better option.
4. Cute and/or Coordinating Outfits Parents will tend to register for and purchase the more practical items. However, friends and family often enjoy going out and picking out cute outfits. Try to find out how the parents feel about matching outfits before purchasing them. Some parents are dead set against them, especially with identical twins. Be sure to include the gift receipt. I've heard about people getting more newborn sized outfits than there were days that the baby actually fit into them. Along those lines, it might be nice to pick an outfit the babies will need to grow into. Just try to remember to keep the seasons in mind. Just because it's cold out when the kids are born, doesn't mean they'll want to wear fleece when they are 6 months old in July. Think about getting some items they can share, this might mean selecting gender neutral items for boy/girl twins. Especially bibs, pajamas and bathing items.
5. Personalized Items This seems to contradict my previous suggestion about getting items they can share, but personalized items are nice for twins. It helps to reenforce their individuality. Parents will love these gifts because, chances are, they picked those names because they like them.
6. Gift Baskets With the Internet, you can find any kind of gift basket you want. You don't need to send a gift basket especially for twins (although they are nice), many gift baskets come filled with enough items for more than one baby. Try to avoid sending a gift basket that is centered around one outfit, with say one hat, one pair of booties etc... Another option is to send two different gift baskets. One for each baby. Personally, I'd avoid sending two exactly the same, at least change the color or style slightly. Some gift baskets include something extra for the parents as well.
7. Handmade or Tradition Gifts If you have the talent and time to make something for the babies these are always the most cherished gifts. My much younger cousin made my little babies special pillows with their names on them that they love. We also had blankets, booties, banks, pictures and more made for them by other friends and family. These are the keepsake items we'll cherish forever.
8. Photo Albums and Baby Books If you can find a baby book and/or photo album made for twins, it would make a great gift. But you can also get one for each baby, especially if you can get them personalized.
